How can I register as an educator on Pathways Awarua so I can access the NCALNE (Voc) professional development for free?

Good question… I’m glad you asked…

You can sign up for free to access all of the content and some of the assessments for the National Certificate in Adult Literacy & Numeracy Education (Vocational/Workplace).

This qualification, otherwise known as the NCALNE (Voc) will soon be the compulsory minimum standard for anyone delivering training at levels 1 and 2 in New Zealand.

If you don’t already have access to this great free resource, you should sign up today. It’s free and there are no strings attached. In addition to gaining access to the online version of our NCALNE (Voc), you’ll also have access to a whole lot of other content as well that could help you or others improve your reading comprehension and maths skills.

This post updates my earlier instructions on how to register on Pathways Awarua to access the NCALNE (Voc) created by Adult Literacy Education & Consulting (ALEC) and Graeme Smith.

Go to www.pathwaysawarua.com. 

You should see the landing page in the screenshot above. Notice there are two buttons for different kinds of registration. Directly below the main Pathways Awarua branding you’ll see a green button on the left hand side called Learner Registration, and a turquoise button on the right hand side labelled Educator Registration.

Click the Educator Registration button

This should take you through to the registration page which is in the screenshot above. Notice that there are two separate steps you have to go through here.

Complete Step 1 of the registration process

• If you are a paid up ALEC learner, we have a unique join code that will make your work immediately viewable to us in the system. If you have this you can skip step 1 and go straight to step 2. Email us on assess@alec.ac.nz to a code if you don’t have it (and should).

Otherwise: Fill in the short form with your name, email, country, organisation, the number of users, and hit the apply button.

This step is to register you on the website. This online training is subsidised by the Tertiary Education Commission so they want confirmation that you are from New Zealand and working with learners in the tertiary sector. The number of users is the number of learners that you have access to.

This should generate an automated email response to the email you submitted with a join code.

Complete Step 2 of the registration process

Once you have your join code you can complete the second part of the process. This is labelled as Step 2 and the bottom part of the page should look like the screenshot above.

You will need to set up a username and password, type in the join code you were emailed, accept the terms and conditions (i.e. tick the box), and hit the register button.

This should also log you in for the first time. From now on, you’ll be able to login from the main landing page with your username and password.

Just a note: If you have already registered for Pathways Awarua before, you don’t need to do all this. You’ll already have access to the content. But you do need to let us know your details so we can move you into our virtual class.

Access the NCALNE (Voc) Training

The first time you enter the site, you may find that you have to do a couple of short modules on how to use the Pathways platform. This is to make sure you know what’s what and where to go. After they are completed, the NCALNE (Voc) will unlock.

From then on, once you are logged in, you should see something like the screenshot above. The shot above is from my own login so you can see my photo and name at the top lefthand side.

Further down in green highlight you can see the heading NCALNE (Voc) which I have clicked on. And on the right hand side you can see the image for the NCALNE (Voc) Pathway.

The top line of the pathways starts with Intro and has buttons for Modules 1 through to 7. I’ve currently got Module 1 selected and this is represented by the green ALEC branding on the button.

You can work through in any order you like, but we recommend that you work through from 1 to 7 if this content is new to you. You can also revisit any of the modules once you’ve completed them.

Underneath the orange ribbon is the Enrol button and seven corresponding Assessment modules. When you start, the first two assessments will be unlocked, but the others will remain locked until you have officially enrolled with ALEC. This means that your organisation will also have paid the per-participant enrolment fee.

So just to clarify: All of the content and access to the first two assessment modules is free. Once you want to be assessed, you need to complete the Enrol module. This will unlock assessments 3 – 7. From there your organisation pays the relevant fee, you do the work, and then gain the credentials. Contact us if you have any questions about this.

As well as the NCALNE (Voc) professional development training you also have access to all of the online literacy and numeracy training that your learners will see when they log in. This content becomes visible once you’ve completed a couple of the Pathways Awarua professional development modules (so you know how it all works).
