Additional Information: Exploring AI’s Role in Adult Tertiary Education

Project Overview

The project, “Scoping the Integration of AI in Adult Tertiary Education: An Equitable and Outcome-Focused Approach in Aotearoa New Zealand,” led by Graeme Smith and Michael Grawe investigates the use and impact of Artificial Intelligence in adult tertiary education. It aims to find practical ways to integrate AI tools that are effective and cater to all learners.

Project Goals

This initiative recognises AI’s potential to improve education by enhancing quality, tailoring learning to individual needs, and addressing the needs of diverse groups, including Māori, Pacific, and neurodiverse students.

It seeks insights from professionals in AI and technology to understand better how AI can be used in education, highlighting the benefits and addressing any challenges of integrating these technologies.

Research Approach: The Questionnaire

Key to this research are two questionnaires designed to collect diverse perspectives on important topics. The first one for educators is detailed here and the second one outlined above seeks to draw on AI experts, enthusiasts and early adopters. It covers

  • Expertise and Experience: Collecting information on the respondents’ backgrounds in AI and their contributions to education.
  • Technological Advancements and Applications: Identifying AI technologies and tools that could impact adult tertiary education, focusing on personalisation, engagement, and efficiency.
  • Challenges and Solutions: Discussing the technical and ethical challenges of using AI in education and looking for solutions that ensure privacy, fairness, and inclusion.
  • Collaboration and Support: Understanding the importance of working together across disciplines to integrate AI into education smoothly and identifying what support educators need to use AI effectively.
  • Future Trends and Recommendations: Anticipating future developments in AI and offering advice on how educators and institutions can adapt.

Community Engagement

The questionnaire is a step towards engaging a community of technologists, educators, and policymakers in a conversation about the future of education in Aotearoa New Zealand.

This effort is focused on ensuring that AI integration into education considers equity, inclusivity, and respect for diverse cultural values, aiming to prepare the educational environment for future technological advancements.

This initiative invites participants not just to provide data but to contribute to developing an educational framework that embraces inclusivity, adaptability, and technological advancement for all learners.
