Why We Wrote a Guide on AI in Education (And Why This is Just the Beginning)
Kia ora!
Over the past year, I’ve been working with my fellow AI enthusiast, Michael Grawe, on a project that’s been both exciting and challenging: a three-part guide series on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Education, tailored specifically for educators in Aotearoa New Zealand.
We just released Volume 1, and I’m genuinely excited to share more about what’s inside — and why this is only the start of what we hope will be a practical, ongoing conversation about AI’s role in education.

Why We’re Creating a Three-Part Guide Series
AI is already reshaping education, and it’s happening faster than many of us anticipated. But with every new tool or technology, we’ve got important questions to answer:
- How do we integrate AI tools in ways that improve learning outcomes?
- How do we ensure these tools are culturally responsive and equitable?
- What ethical considerations should guide us as we adopt AI?
When we started digging into these questions, it quickly became clear that one guide wouldn’t be enough to do the topic justice. That’s why we’re writing a three-part series, with each volume focusing on a different aspect of AI in education:
📚 The Series at a Glance:
🔹 Volume 1: AI Insights for Educators (released) – A foundational guide exploring the current state of AI in education, with insights from global research, survey findings from educators in Aotearoa, and practical tips for navigating ethical and cultural challenges.
🔹 Volume 2: Practical AI Applications for Educators (coming soon) – A hands-on guide with step-by-step strategies for integrating AI into teaching practices. Think: lesson planning with ChatGPT, using AI for personalised learning, and ethical classroom management.
🔹 Volume 3: Leadership and Policy (in development) – Focused on the big-picture challenges of AI adoption. We’ll explore leadership, governance, and policy-making in AI-driven education, with a focus on ensuring equity and cultural inclusivity at every level.
Why Start with Volume 1?
We chose to start with a foundational guide because the educators we spoke to made it clear that understanding the context is key. People want to know:
- What’s happening with AI in education globally?
- How are educators in Aotearoa already using these tools?
- What are the risks, and how do we address them thoughtfully?
Volume 1 answers those questions by providing:
✅ A literature review summarising the latest global research
✅ Insights from over 100 educators in Aotearoa
✅ Culturally responsive frameworks for AI integration
✅ Ethical guidelines to address issues like data privacy and bias
Our goal with this first volume is to give you a solid foundation to navigate the fast-changing AI landscape.

What Inspired This Project?
When ChatGPT burst onto the scene, I noticed a lot of excitement, but also a lot of confusion and concern. Educators wanted to know if these tools could help them, but they also worried about the risks — things like algorithmic bias, student privacy, and whether AI might make education even less equitable.
As someone who works at the intersection of education, culture, and technology, I felt a responsibility to explore these questions more deeply. But I also knew that we couldn’t take a one-size-fits-all approach. Education in Aotearoa is shaped by Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the diverse identities of Māori, Pacific, and neurodiverse learners. We needed to make sure this guide was relevant and culturally grounded.
That’s why we’ve woven Māori and Pacific perspectives throughout the series, and why cultural inclusivity is a key theme across all three volumes.

What You’ll Find in Volume 1
Here’s a quick preview of the key sections in Volume 1: AI Insights for Educators:
1️⃣ Comprehensive Literature Review – Summarising global research on AI’s impact in education, including advancements in tools and ethical concerns.
2️⃣ Survey Insights from 100+ Educators – Real-world feedback from educators across Aotearoa on how they’re using AI, what challenges they face, and what they need to move forward.
3️⃣ Cultural Responsiveness and Inclusivity – Exploring how to integrate AI tools in ways that honour Māori and Pacific worldviews, with practical examples and frameworks.
4️⃣ Ethical Considerations – Addressing data privacy, algorithmic bias, and equity to ensure AI tools are used responsibly and fairly for all learners.

What Comes Next? (A Sneak Peek at Volumes 2 and 3)
🔹 Volume 2: Practical AI Applications for Educators will be all about hands-on strategies. It’ll include:
- How to use tools like ChatGPT and Microsoft CoPilot for lesson planning
- Ways to personalise learning using adaptive AI platforms
- Tips for creating multimedia content with generative AI
- Guidelines for managing AI in a way that enhances — not replaces — human interaction in the classroom
🔹 Volume 3: Leadership and Policy will focus on institutional and policy-level challenges. We’ll explore:
- How to future-proof your institution for an AI-driven world
- Ethical policies that address data privacy, bias, and inclusivity
- Governance strategies for responsible AI adoption
We know that leadership matters when it comes to AI adoption. Without thoughtful leadership, we risk falling into the same traps we’ve seen in past tech rollouts.
Why This Series is Important (and Why Now?)
The education sector is facing rapid change. AI isn’t just a buzzword — it’s already transforming how we teach, assess, and engage with learners. But it’s also raising new challenges around ethics, equity, and inclusion.
The decisions we make today about how we use AI in education will shape learning outcomes for decades to come.
Our hope is that this series helps you make those decisions with cultural sensitivity, ethical integrity, and practical confidence.

What’s the Takeaway?
AI is here to stay, and it’s going to change education in ways we’re only just beginning to understand. But as educators, leaders, and policymakers, we have a unique opportunity to shape this transformation in a way that serves all learners — particularly those who’ve been historically underserved.
That’s what this guide series is about:
Building a future for education that’s ethical, equitable, and inclusive.
