This is an Aboriginal perspective on education. It’s a great metaphor. And there are clear links to similar discussions we have here on the same topics.

It’s just over 5 minutes long and great food for thought. Hat tip: Rachel Bulliff.

Very good way to express it. Love the metaphor of the river compared to the desert – so different. So easy to take for granted a culture that has academic success as norm, not an exception. In my research I noted that the learners saw mathematical proficiency as an ‘exceptional’ achievement, not a norm. You could do it if you worked ‘really really really hard’. Comments like ‘just keep trying and you might make it’. To me this hints at learners being positive in the way we are positive about the Warriors winning the NRL. Yip, it can be done, and boy it’d be great, but it would be out of the normal pattern of things.

    1. yeah… nice analogy too. Thanks.

  2. Great pedagogical tool for first year students of Cultural Studies
