The strongest AI advantage is not access to the smartest model. It is the cognitive ecosystem you build around your own work: a durable body of language, concepts, evidence, patterns, and judgement that compounds across time, tools, and conversations.
Every few weeks a new debate erupts online.
ChatGPT or Claude? Gemini or Copilot? Which model is best?
They are interesting questions, but I think they are becoming the wrong ones.
Over the past three and a half years I have realised that the greatest value I have gained from AI has not come from using the “smartest” model. It has come from staying with a body of work long enough for it to develop its own coherence.
A shared language has emerged.
Concepts have become compressed into names.
Ideas that once took thousands of words can now be invoked in a sentence because they have been refined over months of dialogue, writing, design, teaching, and experimentation.
This is not simply memory.
It is accumulated cognitive capital.
The AI is not replacing my thinking. It is participating in an evolving intellectual environment that spans conversations, blog posts, workshop designs, diagrams, software, and increasingly, multiple AI systems.
That is the important shift.
The real asset is not ChatGPT.
Nor Claude.
Nor whichever model tops the benchmark charts next month.
The asset is the cognitive ecosystem you build around your own work.
Once that ecosystem exists, different AIs can contribute different strengths. One may excel at research, another at design, another at coding, another at critique. They become participants in something larger rather than destinations in themselves.

This also changes how I think about AI literacy.
Perhaps the goal is not simply to learn how to prompt an AI well.
Perhaps it is to learn how to cultivate a coherent body of thinking that compounds over years rather than resetting every time a new model appears.
That feels like a much more durable capability.
In an age of abundant artificial intelligence, our advantage may not come from finding the smartest model.
It may come from building an intelligence that keeps getting smarter because it remembers where it has already been.
