Juan Castillo, the narrator, has checked himself into some kind of facility to escape from the world and “set the record straight” about disturbing events from his past.
What we – and possibly he – discovers is that he can’t escape and that the fiction of the past continues to dictate the reality of present and future actions.

Cubical 496 – A Post-Modern Epistle for Working Life
In the late 20th century, the job of ordering the world’s information had fallen to the machines. Afterwards, the job of printing it out, filing it, and complying with it had fallen to the Assurance Advisors. And their assistants.
Enter the firm of Grumpkin, Grumpkin, Potts, & Skrubb.
It’s hard to beat the printed word really. For the business of bureaucracy, that is. But it was the printers that did it. Back at the beginning of the information age, some fool had invented personal printers. Suddenly anyone could print and distribute.
Not since Gutenberg had there been such a disruption. Then the machines had got really smart and threatened to do away with all the paper. Turns out they just reinforced the status quo.
Because this is how the world ends. Not with a bang. Not with a whisper. But with the silent whirring of printers and buried beneath the weight of human bureaucracy.
All that paper. How heavy it was. Entire planets had already collapsed from the sheer weight of it. So much for the so-called digital revolution.
